ARL's Summer Faculty Research Program was established in 1997 for the purpose of providing science and engineering faculty an opportunity to conduct research with faculty and scientists at the Applied Research Laboratory/Penn State collaborative. Recruitment efforts are targeted at attracting faculty from HBCUs/MIs.

Research faculty selected for the summer program will serve as active, hands-on, contributing members of the research faculty at ARL. A strong possibility exists for estblishing a continuing research project between ARL and the researchers home institution.

Length of program varies according to the research being performed. Faculty customarily spend 10 weeks at ARL. By mutual agreement, the researcher may continue the research project beyond the 10 week period.

Applications will be accepted from January 31 until all available positions are filled. The number of positions available will vary according to the needs of the ARL faculty. Selected applicants will be notified beginning in March.

NOTE: ARL may require U.S. citizenship for some positions.

Who is Eligible?

Faculty who hold a teaching or research position in engineering or science at a U.S. college or university.

Terms

Summer Faculty Fellow applicants must have at least 3 years of research experience in his/her field of expertise since earning a Ph.D. Summer Fellows earn $1,250 per week.

Senior Faculty Fellow applicants must have at least six years of research experience in his/her field of expertise since earning a Ph.D. Applicant must have significant documented record of research accomplishments and publications, particularly in refereed journals and books. Senior Fellows earn $1,500 per week.

Each Fellow will be reimbursed for his/ her personal travel to and from the research site at the start and end of the program. A pre-program visit may also be arranged.

How Selections are Made

Applications will be reviewed by ARL faculty who have opportunities for research in their department. A phone interview or visit to the host site may be arranged prior to the start of the research term.

Housing

There is suitable housing in the neighborhood near ARL. Housing may also be available on the college campus. The program coordinator will attempt to provide assistance with locating suitable housing.
