arl is a penn state defense-related research unit (drru)
The Applied Research Laboratory, a PSU Interdisciplinary and Defense-Related Research Unit, was established in 1945 and is Penn State's largest single research unit with annual research expenditures in excess of $100 million provided primarily by the U.S. Navy. ARL staff include 650 research scientists and engineers, of which over 170 are full time research faculty.
As an Interdisciplinary Unit of Penn State, ARL conducts basic and applied research as well as engineering and technology development for scientific, industrial, and defense applications.
