Undersea Weapons (UW) | torpedo systems (ts)

The mission of the Torpedo Systems (TS) Division led by Mr. Christopher Rogan is to support Navy, ARL and UWO goals by building and maintaining state-of-the-art engineering capabilities in the research, design and transition of all relevant technologies that could be incorporated into current and next-generation undersea weapons. Division engineering disciplines cover those aspects of electrical, mechanical, and systems engineering that are particularly relevant to nose-to-tail weapon design, often culminating in "proof of principle" testing in relevant locations and situations. Division expertise encompasses the following areas:

  • System Engineering: systematic decomposition of the design of a large complex system into manageable size pieces, such that the design can be completed in a systematic, controlled and defined manner. This includes competencies in areas such as systems architecture design, systems modeling, requirements development, program management, configuration management, lifecycle engineering, quality and process control, and safety engineering.

  • Electrical/Electronic Design: power/energy conversion and distribution, low noise amplifiers, high power transmitters, high performance embedded processing including advanced FPGA / programmable logic development

  • 6in_torpedo.jpgMechanical Design: packaging, interconnects, blind-mate connection, finite element analysis (thermal / mechanical), pneumatic systems, reliability/safety, design for manufacturability, fiber optic payout

  • Vehicle Control: inertial navigation, vehicle hydrodynamics, autopilots, discrete system emulation, battery systems and electric/hybrid propulsion

  • System Integration and Testing: land-based hardware-in-the-loop stimulation and test, at-sea field testing, Highly Accelerated Life Testing (HALT), Highly Accelerated Stress Screening (HASS)
